Frequently Asked Questions about water damage restoration, mold remediation and home remodeling

Do we provide free estimates?

Yes, year-round for all projects!

Do we provide remodeling services after water/mold damage repairs?

Yes, Mila’s is a one-stop-shop for repairs, reconstruction and remodeling. Once we get your space cleaned up, we’d love to discuss what paint colors, flooring, lighting, etc. you’d like to add to your renewed space.

How much does water/mold remediation cost?

Your project cost will depend on the size of the affected area (materials) and number of days needed to complete the repair.

Do we work with insurance companies?

We do! Once we’ve spoken and gotten a good idea of your situation, be sure to notify your insurance company of the damage. We can also advise whether insurance coverage is a necessary move for your project. From there, we work with the insurance adjuster by taking pictures and sending samples of the damaged belongings. We use the same estimation program as insurance companies to make sure your project is accurately protected.

If Insurance covers my project, how am I billed?

When insurance is involved, we send our bills directly over to your provider. From there, you will only need to cover the deductible.

Does mila’s have an interior designer?

Yes! We have an in-house designer who would love to hear your ideas and design your place. They can also source materials if you haven’t found options of your own.

IS THERE A FEE TO WORK WITH YOUr DESIGNER?

No, our designer’s services are embedded in the project at no extra cost.

WHAT IF I HAVE MY OWN DESIGNER?

We are happy to work with your designer to transform your home. Creating a final outcome that you love is most important, so we value the professionals you choose to work with to get it done.

How long is the water clean-up process?

Full restoration consists of two major phases:

Phase One (3-4 days) - Mitigation: consists of demolition, cleaning and drying out the structure and belongings.

**Hidden water and/or mold can sometimes show up in the middle of this phase, which can potentially lengthen this step by a few days.

Phase Two (3-14 days) - Reconstruction: consists of adding drywall, installing and finishing floors, painting. Basically anything that gets your home back to its original condition.

**The length of phase two largely depends on the size of the original damage and your space.

If i have multiple projects in mind, can all be discussed during the initial inspection or should I do one at a time?

If you want to get the best bang for your buck, we suggest at least discussing all your projects during the initial inspection. We can work on multiple things while our technicians are in your home, which can cut down the cost of labor greatly. It’s also completely okay to tackle one project at a time, and by discussing all your ideas at the start, we can at least give you a good idea of the timeline and cost for your future endeavors.

What are signs of visible and hidden water damage?

  • Staining on ceilings, walls

  • Peeling paint

  • Sagging ceilings, walls, floors

  • Visible mold growth

  • Musty/earthy smell

  • Constant moisture in your flooring

Is it safe to be at home after a sewer backup?

No - Category 3 water, also known as black water, is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents. Water that comes from beyond a p-trap of the sewer system needs to be treated as a health hazardous situation. We fully discard of any porous materials in your home affected by category 3 water and clean the area with antimicrobial solutions.

What causes mold growth?

Mold can grow on almost any surface when moisture is present and can spread when its spores, carried by air currents, land on other moist surfaces. This is why mold is commonly found on walls lining the exterior of homes and air vents.

If you find mold growth on your walls, it is likely caused by high humidity, condensation and/or water leakage (often hidden inside the wall).

How can i prevent mold?

While completely preventing mold growth is unlikely, routinely cleaning and maintaining your air conditioning and heating systems can decrease the spread of mold. Monitoring and cleaning frequently humid and moist areas of your home can help to decrease the chance of mold growth as well.

HOW SOON WILL I SEE MOLD AFTER A WATER DAMAGE?

Mold can begin to grow around 48 hours after a water damage. That is why we highly recommend attending to leaky pipes, basement pump backups, any water intrusions in your home, as quickly as possible.

what should i do if i think there’s mold in my home?

First things first, we do not want you to put in any devices that will manipulate the air flow of the affected space. While getting the air moving with a fan or trying to decrease the moisture of the room with a dehumidifier seems like the best idea, mold spores will take a ride on the air movement and spread to other areas of your home. Those spores will also likely settle inside your fan or dehumidifier and begin multiplying.

We suggest leaving the space as untouched as possible, and if you can, cover the floor, cabinet, doorway, etc. with plastic as a temporary form of containment until you’ve had the space inspected for bacterial growth.

WHAT CAN BE SAVED IF I’VE HAD MOLD GROWTH OR WATER DAMAGE IN MY HOME?

Unfortunately, what items can be salvaged in a damage really depends on each situation. The one item we can say for certain that will need 100% replacement is insulation. Due to its makeup, insulation cannot be dried out nor cleaned and subsequently is the perfect host for mold growth.

WHAT FLOORING WILL WORK BEST IN MY BASEMENT FOR DEALING WITH WATER INTRUSIONS IN THE FUTURE?

Most flooring options unfortunately do not stack up well against water intrusions. The best flooring options to save you money in the future if you have a basement flood are painting your concrete flooring or having tile installed because these options do not consist of porous materials. Hardwood, luxury vinyl and especially carpet are highly susceptible to absorbing moisture and can become very difficult to restore.
